Let me get something straight… some of us are not :)) Happy Pride Month everyone! To celebrate Pride month, I’ve collected some of my favourite LGBT songs. Whether you’re part of the community or an ally, you’ll surely enjoy these songs and the meanings behind it. So gather around and let’s listen to these hits! 1. Heather – Conan Gray This song is based on a scenario like a bisexual love triangle. According to Conan, the addressee is someone whom he was in love with. However, this individual did not have eyes for him but rather for the titular “Heather”. Why would you ever kiss me? I'm not even half, as pretty You gave her your sweater It's just polyester, but you like her better I wish I were Heather 2. Strawberries & Cigarettes – Troye Sivan From the official soundtrack of Love, Simon, (an American LGBT rom-com film). "Strawberries & Cigarettes" is an immediate standout from the soundtrack that will remind you of the first time you ever fell in love. Long nights, daydreams Sugar and smoke rings, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you 3. Kiss The Boy – Keiynan Lonsdale In 'Kiss The Boy', Keiynan has fallen for a guy but he's unsure if the feelings are reciprocated. If you want to kiss the boy then you better kiss the boy right now You ain't got to be afraid of the words you want to say right now ' Cause love is a game we deserve to play out loud So you want to play then you better kiss the boy Oh, you better kiss the boy right now 4. Girls Like Girls – Hayley Kiyoko The former Disney star’s vision for the “Girls Like Girls” music video goes far beyond the cool factor. The music video sends a powerful message to young adults who might be struggling with sexual identity and self-acceptance. Saw your face, heard your name Gotta get with you Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new Isn't this why we came? Gotta get with you Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new 5. Take Me To Church – Hozier “The song is about asserting yourself and reclaiming your humanity through an act of love. Turning your back on the theoretical thing, something that's not tangible, and choosing to worship or love something that is tangible and real — something that can be experienced.” Hozier says. Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life 6. You Need To Calm Down – Taylor Swift Swift has taken a stand to speak out for the LGBTQ community and for women. One way by writing a song telling the haters to ‘calm down’. You need to calm down, you're being too loud And I'm just like oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh (oh) You need to just stop Like can you just not step on my gown? You need to calm down 7. The Village – Wrabel The five-minute video doesn't shy away from highlighting the daily struggles of many transgender teenagers. There's nothing wrong with you It's true, it's true There's something wrong with the village With the village There's something wrong with the village 8. First Time He Kissed A Boy – Kadie Elder A young boy struggling to find love that is not accepted - yet, it might be closer than he first thinks. First time he kissed a boy He had never, never known Cover up is what they told Feel so cold 9. I Want To Break Free – Queen Although it was originally intended to be a male perspective of the women’s liberation movement, it was then taken on as somewhat of an anthem for one’s own personal freedom for person who finds his/herself in a situation where they feel repressed and want to ‘break free’ of their circumstances and show the real person that they are. It's strange but it's true, yeah I can't get over the way you love me like you do But I have to be sure When I walk out that door Oh, how I want to be free, baby Oh, how I want to be free Oh, how I want to break free 10. If They Only Knew – Alfie Arcuri “Acceptance is something that we all struggle with. For some young people that challenge involves discovering their identity and their sexuality. Being gay myself, I struggled to accept my sexuality for quite sometime. I worked with a team of people and together we have shot a short film for "If They Only Knew" exploring some of the challenges that young LGBTQ people face. I believe that by sharing our stories we can inspire empathy and help support anyone going through that struggle. Love is Love.” Arcuri says. If they only saw The way my lips would shake when they met yours The way our herb was made with open doors I wish they only saw That’s about it everybody! There’s A LOT more LGBT+ inspired songs out there. Each tackles about going through the journey of loving and/or being a part of the LGBT+ community. To our LGBT members, we love you! Love will always be love, no matter what race, gender, or sexuality. Happy Pride Month! - By liyagoesmissing
